Ask about Sri Lanka these days and the response is likely to be tsunamis or tigers - of the Tamil guerrilla type. It's easy to forget Sri Lanka is a tropical island, rising from sandy beaches though lush forests to cool hill towns spread with tea plantations that in quieter times made Sri Lanka - formerly Ceylon - famous. The population is overwhelmingly Buddhist, and ancient traditions are still practiced at holy sites that litter the island. 'Lanka' also has a variety of World Heritage cities, from the picturesque hill town of Kandy, to the Portuguese fortifications of Galle and monastery-strewn ruins of Anuradhapura. Don't forget politics completely though: much of the country is off-limits to tourists due to Tamil Tiger rebel activity.
